Manchester United’s new head coach Ruben Amorim will move forward without Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has left Old Trafford after a productive spell as interim manager

Former Manchester United star Teddy Sheringham has backed the club’s decision to part ways with Ruud van Nistelrooy as Ruben Amorim takes over as head coach.

Amorim arrived at Carrington on Monday after signing off as Sporting Lisbon manager with a win at Braga less than 24 hours earlier. He will have more than a week to get acclimatised to life in England before taking charge of his first United game, away at Ipswich Town on November 24.

He will be joined at Old Trafford by several members of his coaching staff from Portugal. Assistants Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido and Emanuel Ferro, goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital and sports scientist Paulo Barreira are all expected to join once United and Sporting reach the relevant agreements.

One man who won’t be part of the picture, though, is Ruud van Nistelrooy. The former interim manager is among four staff members confirmed to be moving on. However, Sheringham – a Treble winner with United in 1999 – understands the logic behind the clean break.

“It wouldn’t be a mistake for Ruben Amorim to part ways with Ruud van Nistelrooy,” Sheringham told Flashscore. “Most managers come in with their staff behind them and with his stock so high he will be able to make his own demands.

“If he doesn’t know Ruud and doesn’t know his personality then he won’t have his back. I think when new managers come in it’s time for a fresh start and you don’t want any confusion as to what was at the club before.”

Sheringham also recognised Amorim’s impressive record at Sporting, who he leaves with a six-point lead at the top of the Primeira Liga, while noting the 39-year-old will have a very different task at his new club. “I think Amorim is coming out and saying the right things, but until he’s in the hot seat we have no idea what to expect,” he added.

United confirmed Van Nistelrooy’s exit on Monday afternoon with a statement on club media. It came barely 24 hours after he led his team to a 3-0 victory over Leicester to ensure he remained unbeaten as interim boss.

“Manchester United can confirm that Ruud van Nistelrooy has left the club,” the club statement read. “Ruud rejoined in the summer and has taken charge of the team for the past four matches as interim head coach.

“Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend. We are grateful for his contribution and the way in which he has approached his role throughout his time with the club. He will always be very welcome at Old Trafford.

“Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel have also departed and we wish them all well for the future. We will confirm the full men’s first team coaching composition in due course.”
