Russell Brand made rare comments about his divorce from Katy Perry – shortly before being charged with rape and sexual assault.

He has been under investigation since allegations were made in September 2023, and the comedian has now been charged with one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape and two counts of sexual assault.

But shortly before the Metropolitan Police announced the news, Brand, 50, appeared on a podcast where he spoke about his former marriage to singer Katy.

Talking on his Stay Free with Russell Brand podcast episode, which aired yesterday (April 3), he said: “What can I tell you is, when I was married to Katy Perry, she’s like a not entirely normal, because she’s an extraordinary, massive star but she’s not weird or off key. And wasn’t involved in anything nefarious, as far as I could tell.”

He added: “The reasons that a marriage didn’t work are the normal human reasons marriages don’t work, and I have nothing but respect for her.”

Speaking about the differences between himself and the Last Friday Night hitmaker, who he split from in 2011, he continued: “I obviously disagree with her political views.

“But I probably disagree with some of my wife’s political views, my beloved wife, Laura Brand’s political views. So you know, you always disagree with people, don’t ya?”

Since the episode was released, The Metropolitan Police confirmed the British comedian has been charged with offences relating to four separate women.

He is alleged to have raped a woman in the Bournemouth area in 1999. Brand is also accused of an indecent assault in the Westminster area of London two years later.

It was also in the same area where a woman was allegedly orally raped and sexually assaulted back in 2004. Another woman alleged she was sexually assaulted in the area between 2004 and 2005.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said: “The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers.

“The Met’s investigation remains open and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case, or anyone who has any information, to come forward and speak with police.

“A dedicated team of investigators is available via email at CIT@met.police.uk.

“Support is also available by contacting the independent charity, Rape Crisis at 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line.”

Brand is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 2.
