Sainsbury’s has made a major change across some of its popular bakery products across all of its 1,400 UK stores.
The supermarket chain has introduced new packaging across its bakery range in a bid to reduce plastic waste. Products including pastries, doughnuts and baguettes from Sainbury’s in-store bakery will soon have entirely cardboard and paper packaging.
Doughnuts are switching to card boxes with a small window and twin-pack pastries, as well as croissants and cinnamon swirls, are moving to paper bags from the plastic clam-shell style packaging before. Bread loaves, baguettes and batons will now have recyclable paper bags with a plastic window compared to full plastic bags before.
Sainsbury’s says the window on the new packaging can be easily separated from the card box and paper bag and recycled at any front-of-store recycling points at the chain’s supermarkets. The card and paper can also be recycled at home in kerbside recycling. The changes will be seen across all Sainsbury’s 600 supermarkets and 800 convenience stores and will introduced over the coming months.
The supermarket chain says the change to its doughnuts and pastries will see a 90% reduction in plastic waste and will save 414 tonnes over the course of a year. The change to its break packaging will reduce plastic by 60% and will cut waste by 560 tonnes annually.
