Ginger shots have become a popular addition to morning routines due to their potential health benefits – and you can easily make them at home with this simple recipe

Ginger shots are the latest trend for health enthusiasts, offering a zesty kick to start the day and boasting numerous health benefits.

These potent concoctions usually mix fresh ginger root with lemon and a sweetener such as apple juice or maple syrup. Their popularity isn’t just about taste; they’re also celebrated for boosting the immune system.

Margaux, a certified holistic health coach, has shared her easy-to-make recipe on her blog. She says: “A great anti-inflammatory food is ginger. You can easily add it to soups and curries, stews and sauces. But now, you can even drink it straight in a shot.

“I’m sure you will have seen it in health shops or trendy cafes, where they sell them a fortune. Well, you can also make your own for a week and pay only a portion of the price.”

Research highlights gingerol, ginger’s main bioactive compound, as an inflammation reducer, key for a strong immune system. A 2022 study revealed that ginger components are effective against various inflammatory conditions, including psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and even certain cancers, reports the Express.

It also indicated that ginger could alleviate some chemotherapy side effects like nausea. The review underscores the efficacy of ginger’s components in combating several inflammatory diseases.

Ginger has shown antiviral and antibacterial properties, potentially boosting the body’s defence against infections, including E.coli bacteria that can wreak havoc on the intestines.

Ginger shot recipe

Ingredients

  • One ginger root (with several branches)
  • Two lemons
  • One lime
  • One tbsp maple syrup
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • Water (preferably filtered)

Method

Start by peeling the ginger root, lemon, and lime, then toss all the ingredients into a blender. Margaux suggests using a blender over a juicer as it’s easier to clean.

Cover the ingredients with water, then blitz at full speed for about 30 seconds. Place a sieve atop a large jug and gently pour the blended mixture through it.

Depending on the size of your jug and sieve, you might find it easier to do this in batches. Use a teaspoon to stir the liquid and fibre in the sieve, helping the juice filter through.

You can save the dry fibre from the ginger and citrus for another recipe or compost it. Continue sieving until all the liquid is out of the blender, then transfer the juice from the jug to a sterilised glass container.

To sterilise, boil the bottle in water for 10 minutes or use a hot cycle on your dishwasher. Store the ginger shot juice in the fridge for up to five days.

According to Margaux, this batch should be enough for daily shots for two people. She exclaimed: “Every morning, you can drink one of these and feel the energy kick in straight away, because it is strong!”
