The close friend provided a major health update on the condition of hero Southport stabbings teacher Leanne Lucas, who fought to save children from the attacker

The heroic dance teacher who was stabbed multiple times as she fought to save children from a knifeman in Southport is back on the “road to recovery” after another life saving surgery.

The update on Leanne Lucas’ condition came from her best friend of 20 years, Esther Shahroodi, who has been sharing her journey with the community on social media. Yoga instructor Leanne, 35, was stabbed in the back, neck and arms as she “bravely tried to protect children” in her Taylor Swift themed dance party last month. After initially being discharged from hospital, Leanne was “disheartened and frustrated” to be readmitted with an infection in her lungs and problems breathing.

Now after a successful operation to fit a drain on her lung, the teacher is now awaiting “further tests” before another discharge plan can be discussed, Esther said. She wrote: “After a few days feeling down, Leanne has had a better day in herself today.

“We want to thank everyone for their lovely comments and messages of support and well-wishes. They mean so much. I have had some lovely messages from people who have written Leanne poems and created handmade gifts so thank you.”

Esther also revealed that Leanne has been in touch with other victims from the attack but does not herself remember anything from the traumatic incident. Three little girls were killed and ten other children were injured in the attack, which shook the nation and prompted riots across the UK.

People wearing pastel colours lined the streets of the seaside town for the funeral of Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, on Friday. It followed the funerals of tiny Bebe King, six, and Alice Da Silva Aguiar, nine, who were also killed in the attack. A GoFundMe page set up for Leanne has raised more than £35,000.
