It boasts a magnificent cathedral and gorgeous beaches it is easy to see why this has made the list

A beautiful Spanish hotspot with beautiful beaches has been named among the best places to visit next year.

If you’re finding yourself lost for inspiration for your next holiday, the Lonely Planet has revealed its top locations for 2025 – and one of them is in Europe.

The Balearic Island of Majorca’s capital, Palma has been name-dropped on the list and it’s easy to see why. From its famous cathedral to its gorgeous beaches, Palma has something to offer every keen holidaymaker.

In the centre of Majorca is the incredible Cathedral of Mallorca. Constructed between the 1200s and the 1600s this Gothic masterpiece is truly a sight to behold.

Lonely Planet recommends arriving at the cathedral in the early morning to see the light streaming through the largest rose window in Europe, casting rainbows across the interior of the building. From there you can climb the roof terraces for a closer look at the glass.

Right next door is the Palau de l’Almudaina originally an Islamic alcázar (fort), converted into a royal residence in the late 13th century, and now the King of Spain’s plush summer vacation home.

If you’d rather wander the winding streets of Palma then you’re in for a treat. There’s delicious local delicacies like olives and oysters, as well as distinctive souvenirs that will set you apart from other tourists returning home.

One of these is the alpargatas (rope-soled espadrilles) that are an iconic slice of Spain. Boutiques also sell homemade jewellery and artwork – you’re spoiled for choice in Palma.

Of course, there’s also beaches to lounge on; it wouldn’t be Majorca without it. Close to the city centre is Playa de Cala Major, a long stretch of golden white sand speckled with loungers and framed by the shining blue sea.

With a four-star review on TripAdvisor this spot is not to be missed – but visitors say it can get busy so try and get in early to secure a spot on the beach.

One visitor wrote on TripAdvisor: “This is one of the most beautiful beaches around. We had a lovely time there. There are restaurants close by and a very good vibe. Go and enjoy!!! Make sure you come early though to catch a good place on the beach.”

Another said: “It’s a very nice clean beach that offers an amazing experience for swimming.

“The water is so clean and shallow During peak summer, it can get very very crowded. Lots of families and groups of friends. So this beach caters to all kinds of people. There is a restaurant, public shower, and sunbed to rent.”
