Netflix’s most-watched series of all time is set to return for its long-awaited second season, with Player 456 back for revenge

More than three years after bursting onto screens, Squid Game is finally returning for a second season. Streaming later this month, the Korean thriller centres around a deadly survival game in which hundreds of players compete for the chance to win a 456 billion won cash prize.

Season two will continue the story of the previous winner, Gi-hun, who returns to take revenge and put an end to the games once and for all. Squid Game became a global phenomenon when it debuted in 2021, going on to become Netflix’s most-watched series of all time.

It has since racked up more than 2.2 billion hours viewed around the world, ahead of Stranger Things 4. The series hails from Hwang Dong-hyuk, who made history at the 74th Emmys by becoming the first Asian to win the award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

Hwang takes the helm once again as season two director, writer and producer. Ahead of the new series, Hwang said: “Season two is crazy. The world is crazy now. And this [season] is crazy because it’s based on the world as we live in now.”

Squid Game has already been renewed for a third and final season, which is slated to premiere in 2025. But until then, here’s everything you need to know about Squid Game season two.

What is Squid Game season two about?

According to the official synopsis, season two picks up three years after Gi-hun – Player 456 – won Squid Game and gave up going to the US. Back with a new resolution in mind, he once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 456 billion won.

When is Squid Game season two coming out?

Squid Game season two premieres 8am on December 26, Boxing Day. All seven episodes will be available to stream from launch.

How to watch Squid Game season two

Squid Game season two will be streaming exclusively on Netflix, which is included with Sky’s newly revamped TV and Netflix plans. For £15 a month, Sky’s Essential TV bundle includes more than 100 channels like Sky Atlantic, plus subscriptions to Netflix and Discovery+ with a Sky Stream box, the new gadget that streams live and on-demand content to the TV without a traditional satellite dish.

Sky has confirmed the last order date to receive Sky Stream in time for Christmas is December 23. Sky has also launched the new £25 Essential TV and Sky Cinema bundle, which is packed with the latest blockbusters and Christmas classics like Elf and Love Actually, while the £35 Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle comes with all nine dedicated Sky Sports channels.

Who is in the cast of Squid Game season two?

Squid Game season two sees several cast members reprising their roles, including Lee Jung-jae as Gi-hun, Player 456. He returns alongside Lee Byung-hun as Front Man, the masked leader behind the game, with Wi Ha-joon back as Hwang Jun-ho, an undercover detective who enters the game in search of his brother.

Also returning is Gong Yoo as the Recruiter, the mysterious suited man who first invited Gi-hun to enter the Squid Game. Among the new players in season two are Unlocked’s Yim Si-wan, The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure’s Kang Ha-neul, Sweet Home’s Park Gyu-young, and The Glory’s Park Sung-hoon.

Elsewhere, Disney+ is home to a raft of Christmas classics, including Home Alone, The Muppet Christmas Carol and Die Hard.
