This smart hack will ensure that your carrots never go mouldy again – and it only takes mere seconds to do

Have you noticed that your carrots always seem to go mouldy, even when you store them in the fridge? We’ve all been there – you buy a bag of carrots and toss them in your fridge’s crisper draw expecting them to last. But when you open the fridge a few days later, the opposite has happened.

You find them a squishy, rancid mess. Luckily, there’s a super simple hack for keeping carrots fresher for longer, and it only takes seconds to do. According to Real Simple, the best way to preserve your carrots for longer is to remove the greens from the carrots before putting them in the fridge. They also explain that when you leave the greenery on your carrots, the leaves draw in moisture which, in turn, causes the root – the orange part of the carrot we eat – to rot more quickly.

They also advise that it’s best to ‘avoid washing whole, unpeeled carrots’ until you’re ready to cook or eat them. When carrots are kept dry they tend to remain fresher for longer, whereas when they’ve been exposed to water, they tend to rot more quickly.

For storing peeled carrots for up to a month, it’s recommended that you wash them fully, and then store them in a container filled with cool water, placed in the fridge. Just make sure to change the water of the container every few days to help prevent bacteria growth.

If you know how to store your carrots properly, they can last for between three and four weeks in the fridge. For best results, store unpeeled carrots wrapped in a dry paper towel and then place them in an airtight container, before putting them in the fridge.

If you’re storing cooked carrots, it’s best to place them in an airtight container and keep them cool in the fridge. When stored properly, cooked carrots should last for around four days.
