Storm Éowyn is expected to be one of the most intense storms in decades with forecasters warning of a danger to life and widespread disruption, especially across Northern Ireland

Schools closures have been confirmed this morning due to the destruction of Storm Éowyn.

Two extremely rare red weather warnings – highlighting a “danger to life” – are among several alerts for wind and rain in place across the UK at the moment. Gales of up to 100mph have been forecast along the western coast of the UK, including in Cumbria, Dumfries and Galloway, South Ayrshire and North Ayrshire.

Schools in these areas are expected to be at risk of closure today. However, some elsewhere have already been confirmed as closed for safety reasons. In Northumberland, at least 18 schools won’t open their doors today and across north Wales, more than 30 schools are shut.

The government offers a tool for families to check whether their school is open on days like these. Families must pop in their postcode on the search bar and navigate through to the relevant webpage for such information. It can be accessed on the government’s website.

And with the Met Office stating there will be “very strong winds associated with Storm Éowyn, causing very dangerous conditions and significant disruption on Friday,” health and safety has been prioritised today.
