From a young falcon hunting a butterfly to an adorable macaque cuddling its mum, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition has gad some breath-taking entries again

A macaque snuggling in its mum’s arms is a winning image from the Wildlife ­Photographer of the Year competition. The picture, taken in Sri Lanka by Hikkaduwa Liyanage Prasantha Vinod, triumphed in the Behaviour: Mammals category.

But it was a swarm of tadpoles captured by Shane Gross in Canada that claimed the overall crown from a record-breaking 59,228 entries, in what was the 60th year of the Natural History Museum’s contest. Kathy Moran, chairwoman of the ­competition jury, said: “Over the last few years, the competition has highlighted environments and species that are often overlooked.”
