Parent and child parking spaces are typically situated closer to the supermarket’s entrance

Motorists are being advised to think twice before bagging a prime parking spot at supermarkets. With the often maddening rush to nab a space, it’s all too easy for drivers to swoop into the first available slot.

But vehicle retailer Wilsons has advised drivers to steer clear of parent and child bays unless they meet the conditions set for these spots. They clarified: “Parent and child parking bays are reserved specifically for parents or guardians travelling with one or more children under 12-years-old in the vehicle.

“However, these spaces are only available to parents who need to take a child (or children) with them into the supermarket or shopping centre. If you are planning to leave a child (or children) in the vehicle under the care of another adult for a short period of time, it is encouraged that you use a regular parking bay instead.”

Wider lanes in parent and child parking areas and their proximity to store entrances aim to reduce risks for youngsters navigating busy car parks. But remember, you’re only eligible to park there if accompanied by an under-12 child who will be joining you inside the shop. Violators could find themselves stung with a Parking Charge Notice of up to £100, reports the Express.

Consequently, it’s essential for motorists to be vigilant and check the rule signs spotted within public car parks to ascertain their eligibility to use the spaces. Wilsons underlined that pregnant drivers or passengers might be entitled to park in parent and child bays, though it often depends on individual circumstances.

They said “This question is very much debatable and can vary from car park to car park. Whether a pregnant person can park in a parent and child parking space is down to how much it is needed.”

They added: “For this reason, if a woman is heavily pregnant then it is very much acceptable for her to park in a bay usually designated for parents with children. This is because it can become more difficult for a pregnant person to get in and out of a car in the later stages of pregnancy, so she will need more space.”
