Susan Calman has announced that a new episode of Christmas Cruising won’t air later this week following the ‘horrific events’ at a festive market in Germany recently
Susan Calman has announced that a show in which she explores festive activities in Germany has been pulled from the schedule following a recent incident there.
Christmas Cruising With Susan Calman was set to return on Friday. The comedian, 50, has however announced that it’s been pulled from Channel 5’s schedule after the “horrific events” at a Christmas market in Magdeburg last week. Five people have died, including a nine-year-old boy, and 200 people were injured, when a man drove a car at speed through a market in the German city last Friday. Susan said that whether to still air her new special had been “deeply thought” about after the incident, adding that her Lapland cruise from last year will be shown instead.
Alongside a photo of her walking in a snow-covered forest, she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “I wanted to let you know something that’s been deeply thought about.” She added: “In light of the horrific events at the Christmas Market in Germany, Christmas Cruising won’t be broadcast on Dec 27. Last year’s Lapland cruise will be shown. Sending love to those affected by the tragedy.”
Susan was getting into the Christmas spirit on a festive cruise in Germany along the Main and Rhine rivers, according to the programme synopsis. It added that every stop on the cruise “promises a picture-perfect scene from a Christmas card”.
Many flowers and candles have since been placed near the market where the attack took place. A 50-year-old Saudi doctor has been arrested on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and bodily harm over the attack. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier spoke about the attack in his Christmas Day speech, saying that “there is grief, pain, horror and incomprehension over what took place in Magdeburg”.
The first series of Christmas Cruising aired in 2021 and saw her tour Norway, whilst the second series included trips to Hungary and Austria. More recently, she was seen visiting Lapland in A Christmas Cruise, which aired last year.
Promoting it at the time, Susan wrote to her followers on Instagram: “If you’re looking at your Christmas viewing may I recommend a lovely show called Christmas Cruising.” She added: “Set boxes to record, circle it in your magazines and settle in for the most festive show you’ll see this year.”
Since the launch of the show, she has also fronted several series of Cruising with Susan Calman, which are not festive-themed. The third series of that show was released earlier this year. A release date for the upcoming fourth series of Cruising has yet to be announced by Channel 5.
