Passengers had embarked on the Amore Mio on New Year’s Day for a trip along Mexico’s coastline – but disaster struck during the journey and the tourists had to scramble free

Yacht crashes into rocks as divers help rescue tourists

This is the shocking moment a yacht carrying tourists crashed into rocks and sank during a chaotic New Year’s Day boat trip.

Passengers scrambled free after the Amore Mio smashed into a large rock wall along the coast near La Quebrada, Acapulco in Mexico. The crash sent the luxury boat swaying from side to side before it toppled into the rock surface again. Terrifying footage taken by a witness on the shore shows the tourists scream and jump off the sinking ship in a wave of panic.

In the video, divers rush into the water to help the passengers as the yacht bobs helplessly up and down in the water. It is believed strong currents pulled the boat towards the rocks as it tried to ferry passengers on a luxury yacht excursion on New Year’s Day. Despite the fierce impact, it is thought no one suffered serious physical injuries.

Revellers had gathered on the bow of the Amore Mio for the trip and were seen there when disaster struck. Worried witnesses on the shore are seen in the clip shouting and gesturing for the group to jump clear moments before the impact. They eventually do and are helped to shore by the have-a-go heroes who leap into the water in La Quebrada, a famous tourist attraction in Mexico for its steep ravine.

Acapulco is one of Mexico’s oldest beach resorts, and came into prominence in the 1940s through to the 1960s as a getaway for Hollywood stars and millionaires. Wealthy holidaymakers still flock to Acapulco now, where winter temperatures regularly exceed 30C.

But the tourists on Wednesday diced with disaster as parts of the boat’s mechanics came tumbling into the water after its crash. It is understood the passengers are receiving help for any mental trauma experienced. The Mexican Navy have cordoned off the area, which is to the west of the city.

A £10million superyacht smashed into a cruise ship off the Bahamas last month. Footage taken by passengers showed the Aurora yacht veering diagonally towards the massive Allure of the Seas cruise ship while it was docked in Nassau Harbour on December 12.
