If you’re wondering whether your hair products are working correctly for you, a woman shared there’s a test to try and that will determine how porous your hair is

Do you know how porous your hair is?

It can be all too easy to assume you’ve got straight hair when, actually, you may be walking around with wavy locks but just using the wrong products that weigh them down too much.

While there are quizzes online you can complete to find out which ‘type’ of hair you have, one woman shared you can easily check the porosity by simply putting some strands of your hair in a glass of water – and this will give you the answers you need to continue your hair journey properly.

Tessa Peay, who regularly posts hair care and lifestyle content on TikTok, shared it’s important to know your hair porosity. If you don’t, you could be using all the wrong products and accidentally making your hair look lacklustre.

She said you’re “throwing money away on products that don’t work for you,” which is seriously annoying when you’re trying to achieve your dream mane.

To test the porosity of your hair, she recommended you “start with clean hair without any product,” then “take a couple of pieces of hair and cut them to be three inches”.

Then, “fill a glass with water,” set a timer for five minutes, and “let it sit still”. She then explained after those five minutes are up, “depending on where it floats is your hair’s porosity”.

She then shared an infographic that explained where your hair floats and what it means for you. If your hair floats to the top of the glass, it means you have low hair porosity.

This means you have closed hair cuticles, and your hair does not absorb moisture easily, and the product you’re using can build up easily on your hair. If your hair is around the middle of the glass, it means it has medium hair porosity. Your hair is easily moisturised, retains moisture well, and has an ideal porosity.

If your hair is sitting on the bottom of the glass, this means it has high porosity. This means it absorbs moisture easily, but also loses moisture easily. It can also look dull and dry, and may tangle easily, and often tends to be frizzy.

In the caption of the video, Tessa also shared: “I recommend testing a couple of different hairs to make sure because sometimes your hair can be a mix.”

Someone wrote: “I got low porosity, and everyone else did too. I think this doesn’t work because hair is already so light. How would it make sense for it to sink?” Others said their hair did, in fact, sink to the bottom of the cup, and some reported theirs floated and others sank.

Of course, your hair porosity can determine what products you use, but trial and error is advised when trying new things. If it doesn’t work for you, stop using it, and try something different.
