The beautiful historic city was one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones, but visitors have described it as ‘horribly touristy’ and ‘crowded’

Dubrovnik, the famed mediaeval pearl of Croatia, has been blasted by visitors on Reddit as overpriced and overrun with tourists. The historic city, celebrated for its walled Old Town – and more recently for its appearances in “Game of Thrones” – is struggling under the weight of its popularity.

Despite attempts to limit numbers, it’s not uncommon for over 1,000 cruise passengers to flood its streets each day. One unimpressed traveller posted: “Beautiful place, but it’s horribly touristy, crowded and filled with cruise passenger tours.”

They added: “It’s basically Balkans Disneyworld in all of the worst ways, with whatever Croatian culture that was there long abandoned.”

Another critic echoed these sentiments, saying: “Croatia is amazing but this city doesn’t represent it well. It’s super expensive and very, very touristy. Even worse when cruise ships roll in. Explore the rest of the country too.”

For those wanting to experience Croatia without the chaos of Dubrovnik, the off-peak seasons or lesser-known spots might be the solution, reports the Express.

Rastoke, a hidden jewel just two hours from Zagreb, offers breath taking waterfalls and is an ideal spot for nature lovers dreaming of a fairy tale escape.

Rastoke’s enchanting landscapes have naturally spawned a host of legends, often featuring fairies said to have resided in the locale. The Croatian tourism site declares that these mystical beings are rumoured to have settled in the town from “ancient times.”

On their portal, it’s mentioned: “These timid forest creatures have lived in the Rastoke area since ancient times, and are mostly active at night, as they usually avoid people.”
