Dresden is a winter wonderland and a history buff’s dream, with stunning baroque architecture, fine dining, and one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world

Nothing quite captures the festive spirit like a leisurely stroll around a Christmas market. While you may have already explored what London has to offer, there are some markets located just a bit further away.

One of Europe’s best winter markets is nestled in the German city of Dresden, which is also renowned for surviving a significant Allied attack during World War Two. Often referred to as the German “Florence on the River Elbe”, Dresden is home to an abundance of breath-taking baroque architecture and Christmas cheer.

Dresden’s Striezelmarkt is thought to be one of the oldest of its kind globally, initially starting as a one-day market in 1434, reports MyLondon. It was traditionally used for selling meat to the citizens for their Christmas meals following the customary Advent period of fasting.

Now in its 590th year, the Striezelmarkt has grown to include over 240 stalls which draw more than three million visitors annually from all corners of the world. The market derived its name from the word “Struzel” or “Stroczel,” which was a type of cake sold during the festivities, but is now commonly known as Stollen or Christstollen. The market is running from November 27 to December 24.

Indulge in delicacies like Pflaumentoffel (little figures made from decorative prunes), Pulsnitzer Pfefferkuchen (Pulsnitz gingerbread), and Gluhwein (which we know as mulled wine). The market is also famed for its intricate decorations, including the Christmas candle pyramid which stands 14 metres tall, wooden ornaments, and an abundance of nutcrackers.

You’ll find the market stalls scattered throughout the city, including on Prager Strasse, known as Dresden’s top shopping mile; the traditional market at the Frauenkirche; and speciality markets selling handmade gifts, jewellery, and books. The Frauenkirche, dating back to the 11th century, offers a glimpse into the city’s history.

Over time, the Frauenkirche fell into disrepair and underwent several renovations, notably by George Bahr, who added the church’s iconic dome. During World War Two, the Frauenkirche collapsed following the devastating bomb attack on the city in 1945.

It remained in ruins for years until the city council decided to preserve what was left and declare it a memorial. Over an 11-year period, the church was rebuilt and finally reopened its doors in 2005.

Other notable landmarks include the Dresden Zwinger, considered one of Germany’s most famous Baroque buildings. The building was designed to host a variety of festivals and exhibitions.

At the Zwinger, you can explore the Porcelain Collection, Old Masters Picture Gallery, and the Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments. In the Green Vault museum at the Residenzschloss, you can tour the treasury of August the Strong, where eight rooms display the value of the objects, such as the Weisilberzimmer (White Silver Room) and the Silbervergoldetes Zimmer (Silver Gilt Room).

Consider catching a show at the Semper Opera House, hailed as one of Dresden’s most stunning structures. The city boasts several highly-rated museums, such as the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister, the Museum of Military History, and the Panometer Dresden.

For those who enjoy the great outdoors, Dresden offers vibrant gardens like the Grosser Garten Dresden or the grounds at Schloss and Park Pillnitz for a leisurely stroll. When it comes to dining, Dresden doesn’t disappoint with its array of food options, from traditional German fare to international dishes.

Other Christmas markets in the city include Augustusmarkt (November 27 to January 5), The Christmas Market on the Neumarkt (November 27 to January 5), and the Dresden Winter Lights Markets (November 28 to December 23).

Dresden exudes a festive atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for a quick winter getaway, especially if you’re keen on visiting one of the world’s oldest markets.
