Lauren Laverne is not forgetting her roots and proudly shared huge music news regarding her home city of Sunderland

Lauren Laverne was delighted to share news close to home.

It was revealed on Tuesday that the radio presenter’s home city of Sunderland became only the second city in the UK to achieve Music City status. And Lauren beamed as she shared the announcement on social media.

In a post on Facebook, The One Show presenter, 46, said: “Just popping up to share some wonderful news from my home town Sunderland. It is officially as of today a music city. That means it’s joining a global network including places like Berlin, Valencia, Sydney and Manchester. Huge congratulations Sunderland Music City.”

The Music Cities Network, established in 2016, connects cities worldwide to promote the music industry’s growth, economic development, and cultural exchange. Inclusion in the network gives members access to collaborative opportunities, resources, and advocacy that will help the city build on its music ecosystem and support cultural, social, and economic development.

Andrew Dipper, Marketing Director at Sunderland Music City, said: “Being part of the Music Cities Network helps put a flag in the ground to show that this is the place to be for music lovers, musicians, and anyone wanting to make a career for themselves in music. Sunderland has always been a Music City, and now we’re in the best possible position to share that fact with the world.”

Lauren’s video showcasing the announcement comes weeks after it was announced she will step down from BBC 6 Music’s breakfast show, after taking time away for cancer treatment. The presenter, who also hosts Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, is set to hand the reins to Nick Grimshaw, who has been presenting the show in her place since August.

She will, however return to the airwaves in a different role. Speaking alongside Nick, Lauren revealed earlier this month: “I am coming back to 6Music, I am delighted to say. But not to breakfast. I am making a change, it is the right time and the 6Music breakfast show has a new host.” Nick added: “It does and it’s going to be me, as it has been for the past couple of months.

In August, Lauren revealed she had been diagnosed with cancer in a shock update. She explained the diagnosis was caught “early and unexpectedly during a screening test.”
