TikTok user Desyr was shocked to learn the number of times her friend washed her bra. She questioned others on the social network and got a variety of answers

A woman was ‘astonished’ after learning how her friend washes her bra.

She was surprised after debates about washing other items such as towels and duvets on the social networking site. But Desyr was shocked to learn the number of times her friend washes her bra.

Experts say over-washing the underwear can impact how elastic a bra is. This is hugely important as it’s the reason bras are worn in the first place.

Kimmay, a bra fitter who goes by @hurraykimmay on TikTok, said “As a bra fitter since 2005, I do have some insight on this. “If it’s a sports bra or if it was a really sweaty day, wash it right away.

“If it’s a basic bra that you’re wearing just normally then I usually suggest washing your bra every three or four wears.”

She said one of the main reasons for washing the underwear was to ‘get rid of all the dirt and grime that has collected on the elastic’ because this can ’cause it to break down early’.

Desyr’s friend however did was unaware of this and a discussion emerged about bra washing. She said: “I’m now just curious, like, how often does everyone wash their bras? Like, I need to know what the standard is amongst women everywhere.”

In a video clip she asked: “What’s the average? What’s the most common for bra washing duration? Because, apparently, we are not all the same.”

Desyr’s friend, however, said she washed the garment just once a year. But this surprised others who said they washed theirs daily. One poster on the social networking site said: “Change ALL underwear everyday and wash. Oh my god what is wrong with people?!”

“I change my bra everyday,” another person wrote. “You change your underwear every day. A bra is an underwear, imagine the boobie sweat. I only wear clothes once and wash them.”

A third person added: “Wear it once and wash it.”

But others waited much longer before washing theirs. “About a month after it starts burning my eyes while I’m wearing it. I’m joking but the truth isn’t incredibly far…”

More comments emerged: “Whenever it ends up in the wash – might be a week, might be a month, might be a year!”

And another person said: “Every 1-2 months… when it looks or smells dirty,” admitted another. This was echoed by another poster who said: “When one finds its own way in the washing basket…”

“When it looks dirty? Or when I find another I like the same to wear,” added a fifth, while a sixth chimed in: “Until it changes colour?”
