Thomas Tuchel has agreed to become England’s next permanent manager, with the German being handed a bumper payday by FA chiefs to replace interim boss Lee Carsley

Thomas Tuchel has signed a bumper £5million-a-year deal with the FA after agreeing a deal to take over as England manager.

The German is expected to be announced as the Three Lions’ new permanent boss on Wednesday at a press conference at Wembley Stadium. He left his job as Bayern Munich boss at the end of last season and has been effectively on gardening leave ever since.

But Tuchel has decided to end his time out of the game to take charge of the Three Lions. A deal between the German and FA chiefs was wrapped up quickly on Tuesday after he emerged as their top target.

Lee Carsley has been in interim charge of the team for the Nations League. But a defeat to Greece last week all but ended his hopes of taking the role on permanently.

The decision to go for an established and successful coach at club level will cost the FA. Tuchel will earn around £5m per year as England boss and will official start his new role on January 1. Gareth Southgate, who stepped down after losing to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, was on £2.5m-a-year with big incentives and bonuses.

His contract will initially last for 18 months, taking him through qualifying for the 2026 World Cup and the tournament itself – if the Three Lions make it that far. He is expected to officially take over on New Year’s Day, with Carsley in charge for the final two Nations League games in November.

The FA have though avoided paying any compensation to bring in the German. His contract with Bayern ran until July 2025, but the Bundesliga giants have agreed to waive any payment to allow Tuchel to take over England.

It is his first job in international management, having previously taken charge of Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, PSG, Chelsea and Bayern. Tuchel has won a raft of trophies, including the Champions League in 2021.

The man he beat in that final, Pep Guardiola, had also been approached by the FA. But it became clear that the Catalan is instead likely to sign an extension with Manchester City, accelerating the move for Tuchel.

Tuchel has already flown to London and becomes only the third non-English manager in the Three Lions’ history after the late Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. The FA moved for Tuchel with Manchester United considering him as their replacement for Erik ten Hag.

The new England boss has already received the backing of Three Lions skipper Harry Kane. While he insisted he has not been told of any potential deal, Kane failed to hide his admiration of Tuchel, having working under him at Bayern.

“To be honest, I haven’t heard anything specific about it yet. That’s why I can’t really comment on it until it’s officially announced,” Kane told Sky Germany when asked about Tuchel’s talks with the FA.

“We’ll have to wait and see what happens. I obviously know Thomas very well from the last year. He’s a fantastic coach and a fantastic person. I’m sure the FA will contact me when they know more about this issue.”
