Struggling to doze off? Tired of being tired all the time? Gardening ace Michael says adding these stunning houseplants to your bedroom could help you get some much-needed kip
Sleep like a baby by adding these stunning plants to your bedroom.
The NHS states adults should aim for around seven-nine hours of sleep every night to help repair our minds and body. If that advice seems laughable to your, you’re probably one of millions that struggle to doze off, run off little-sleep, and risk a slew of chronic health conditions including high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and even higher risk of stroke. Michael, aka The Mediterranean Gardener, who has racked up an impressive 254,00 followers on TikTok alone thanks to his handy gardening tips and tutorials, says adding certain plants to your bedroom could help you get some much needed kip due to night time photosynthesis.
“We all know that plants take in carbon dioxide and give us oxygen throughout the day, but at night photosynthesis stops and only carbon dioxide diffuses out,” the pro said in a recent video. “But, here are three house plants that continue to release oxygen at night due to their Crassulacean acid metabolism.”
Peace Lily
Peace Lilies (Spathiphyllym) are a popular flower known for their elegant white blooms and glossy leaves. They’re pretty easy to grow and will be happy as long as you place them in indirect light and water them when the top few centimetres of soil gets dry. Michael states peace lilies are also one ‘of the best’ plants when it comes to air purifying, and release oxygen at night to help your get a good night’s rest.
Areca palm
With a bamboo-style appearance, Areca palm plants (Dypsis Lutescens Chrysalidocarpus)have thin green-golden trunks and rich glossy leaves that add an interesting flair to any room. Experts agree these plants are a doddle to look after, as long as you make sure you don’t over water them. “They really enjoy being in a well lit area but will cope just fine if you have a slightly darker spot,” HousePlant.co.uk said, hailing the plants ‘humidifying and air-purifying qualities’.
Orchid
Orchids need little introduction: they’re delicate, beautiful, and are great for getting rid of toxic fumes. In fact, Plantura states the popular plant can ‘reliably absorbs xylene, toluene and formaldehyde from the air, creating a healthy indoor environment’. Michael agrees, adding: “This beautiful flowering plant will purify and oxygenate the air in your room at night.” However, orchids can be a little diva-esque when it comes to maintenance.
