The Valentine’s Lamp has been a beloved fixture in the town of Frome for over three decades, and continues to enchant visitors and locals alike with its romantic tradition

Tucked away in the artisan quarter of Frome, Somerset, with its quaint cobblestone streets and historic charm, there lies a beacon of romance that has won over the hearts of both locals and visitors – the Valentine’s Lamp.

Perched atop St Catherine’s Hill, this lamp is more than just a light; it’s a symbol of lasting love and the spirit of the community. For over thirty years, the Valentine’s Lamp has been an integral part of Frome, silently witnessing countless romantic tales unfold beneath its glow.

Each year, precisely at 5.30pm on Valentine’s Day, the person responsible for restoring the lamp launches a rocket to draw people to the site. Then, at 6pm, he begins the lighting ceremony with the traditional lamp lighters’ pole in hand.

The lamppost itself is a work of art, painted white with wild roses winding down its length, and at the very top sits Cupid’s arrow, pointing east towards the dawn, symbolising new beginnings.

Additionally, there’s a lovingly restored, classic red George V post box attached to it, ready to receive love letters or Valentine’s cards. A plaque beside the lamp declares: “Let the lighting of this lamp today, the 14th February 1993, dedicate this site forever to St Valentine, patron and protector of all who find love, regardless of race, creed or gender.”

The Valentine’s Lamp remains a source of magic in Frome, bewitching both locals and tourists with its charming glow. On Valentine’s Day, the town unites in celebration of this beloved beacon, reports the Express.

Outside the holiday period, one visitor remarked: “I’m going to come back to the town on Valentine’s Day, because the tradition is so unusual. I think it’s a pretty feature of the town, and quite romantic!” Tripadvisor reviews echo this sentiment; @Hawaiiseadog commented: “This is a wonderful feature we saw when walking down Catherine Hill. There is bench nearby to sit and watch the world go by in this attractive part of Frome.”

Another traveller, SuzyDimm, shared her experience: “We visited Frome for the day and couldn’t miss going down Catherine Hill where the Valentine Gas Lamp is.”

Known for its indie vibe, Frome is dotted with retro shops, hipster cafés, and green marketplaces that exude contemporary cool. The serene River Frome adds to the tranquil atmosphere, perfect for lovebirds looking for a picturesque promenade.

The cobbled lanes lead to historic gems, secret spots, and untold stories embedded within the town’s rich tapestry. For foodies, Frome offers an exciting gastronomic journey, featuring cosy eateries nestled in age-old structures that set the stage for romance.
