In the wake of heavy flooding across parts of Wales and the Midlands, the Met Office has issued two weather warnings for rain as a band of low pressure sweeps northest

More than 100 flood warnings are in place across England and Wales today – as downpours sweep northeastwards.

Some 50mm of rain is expected to lash across some regions throughout the day and, with some regions already struggling in the wake of flooding caused by Storm Bert, forecasters are fearful of more damage.

The only severe flood warning – serious for “danger to life” – concerns the River Nene at Billing Aquadrome and nearby business parks near Northampton, which was devastated by flooding on Monday. More than 1,000 people had to be evacuated from caravans at the holiday park there after it was submerged by the highest floodwater in 35 years.

Several flood warnings concern points along the River Severn from Gloucestershire in the south to Shrewsbury, Shropshire, in the north. The Environment Agency “river levels remain high” along the Severn and “flooding of property, roads and farmland is expected to continue,” especially in and around Worcester.

The majority of the flood warnings concern parts of the Midlands, including two along the River Avon in Worcestershire. Four are for Wales, including two along the River Wye in Monmouthshire. Residents living each of the warnings should “act now” to prepare for flooding, the Environment Agency says.

The Met Office’s site reads: “An area of rain is expected to reach parts of southern England overnight Tuesday, becoming persistent and heavy in places for a time.

“Much of the warning area will see 15-20 mm of rain with 30-40 mm in some areas. There is a lower chance of 50 mm of rain in a few places, more likely for the Isle of Wight, Sussex and Kent, before rain eases and clears by early afternoon. Given recent wet weather, some disruption to travel and infrastructure is likely.”

Both weather warnings are in place until midday on Wednesday. The smallest of these covers parts of Dorset and Devon while another warning stretches from Hampshire in the west to Essex and Kent in the east.

Spray and flooding on roads will make journey times longer during rush hour. Flooding of a homes and businesses is likely, the Met Office says and some interruption to power supplies and other services is possible due to the rain.
