The mercury is set to drop to a chilly -4C in parts of the UK this week, according to the new weather forecast maps, with a number of areas forecast to see snow

Britain could be plunged back into a sub-zero winter chill very soon, according to new forecasts.

Weather maps from WXCharts have turned a dark blue colour as temperatures are expected to drop well below freezing in multiple parts of the UK this Thursday, falling as low as -4C in some areas to north. The mercury is expected to tumble into the minus figures overnight in Wales, the northwest and most of Scotland, and will hover around 0C further south. Slightly warmer conditions are forecast in the southwest, where temperatures will reach 3C. Snow is also forecast across the Scottish Highlands and to the south of Edinburgh.

In the meantime, forecasters have told Brits to expect more severe weather in the wake of Storm Bert after a new storm was named. Storm Connall, named by the Dutch meteorological service, is expected to sweep across the UK in the early hours of this morning, bringing heavy rain to the south and southeast of England. A yellow warning for rain will cover much of the south coast until midday today, with a separate warning also in place for parts of Devon.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Steve Willington, said: “Much of the warning area will see 15-20 mm of rain, with 30-40 mm in some areas. There is a lower chance of 50 mm of rain in a few places, more likely for areas such as the Isle of Wight, Sussex and Kent, before rain eases and clears by early afternoon. Given the recent wet weather, some disruption to travel and infrastructure could be possible. Along with the rain, things will turn colder from tomorrow for all, with frost and some freezing fog possible.”

Other parts of country will see a largely cloudy day on Wednesday with occasional outbreaks of rain. Drier weather is expected for Scotland and Northern Ireland, where some bright spells are likely. Maximum daytime temperatures of 8C are forecast in London, 6C in Belfast and 5C in Edinburgh.
