The beautiful town is just an hour and a half away from London and is the ideal spot for a relaxing day trip or weekend break away from the hustle and bustle of the city

A UK town six miles from the sea was once hailed as Europe’s most relaxing spot.

Arundel in West Sussex was crowned the most laid back, calm place in the country in a TravelSupermarket list, thanks in part to the beautifully rolling hills of the South Downs which surround it, and the generally easy-going nature of the people who live there.

The town is a true visual treat. Its high street could easily vie for the country’s best, the cathedral dominating the skyline is awe-inspiring, and the River Arun adds a certain Oxbridge-like charm to the whole place. There are some lovely walks starting from the town itself, none better than the amble along the River Arun to the Black Rabbit pub nestled on the river banks. If you’re up for a challenge, you could tackle something more demanding, like the six-mile trek across the South Downs to the quaint village of Amberley, reports MyLondon.

The town is packed with independent shops, art galleries, pubs, restaurants, and coffee shops, making it an excellent base for cycling and canoeing. It’s a gorgeous place to visit all year round. At Christmas, just after dusk, with the decorations illuminated, the town looks especially magical.

A pleasant afternoon can be spent soaking up local history at the Arundel Museum or meeting the town’s feathered residents at The Wetlands Centre. If you happen to be in the locale on a sunny summers day, then watching a match of cricket at Arundel Castle Cricket Club is one of the most picturesque, relaxing things you can do. The stunning ground looks out onto the South Downs.

After building up a sweat watching the village cricketers go at it in the sunshine, you can cool off in the town’s lido – the only remaining Lido in West Sussex, which is operated by a charitable trust and runs throughout the year.

Arundel station is just a 15-minute walk or a quick taxi ride from the town centre, and it’s about a 90-minute journey from London Victoria. If you’re driving, it’s roughly the same duration from parts of South London, via the M23, A23 and A27. Fancy extending your trip? West Wittering isn’t far off and boasts arguably the best beach in West Sussex. But remember, pre-booking is essential to prevent overcrowding in car parks, local roads and the beach itself.
