There are over 500 ‘micropubs’ all over the UK, but what exactly are they and where can you find your nearest one to visit? Here’s all you need to know about micropubs

As the nights draw in and the temperatures drop, a new trend is taking the UK by storm: cosy, one-room micropubs.

These tiny, independent establishments are popping up all over the country, offering a warm, welcoming escape from the chilly outside air. Specialising in locally brewed craft beers and ales, they’re quickly becoming the go-to destination for those seeking a more intimate, community-focused alternative to the usual pub scene.

As of 2024, there are over 500 micropubs scattered across the UK, a number that continues to rise despite the challenging hospitality climate. The trend also shows no sign of slowing down, particularly in coastal towns and small cities. The Covid-19 pandemic also played a role in this resurgence, as people began seeking out smaller, safer environments to socialise.

Here are some of the UK’s cosiest micropubs:

The Dove

Located in Hammersmith, London, The Dove holds the Guinness World Record for the smallest bar in Britain, measuring only 4ft by 7ft 10in. The pub is situated on the Thames and was formerly a coffee house. The spot was even often frequented by Ernest Hemmingway. Whilst not independent as it is owned by Fuller’s, the London drinking spot attracts celebrities as well as keen tourists alike. The outdoor terrace is also an added bonus, as it looks over the Thames.

The Signal Box Inn

The Signal Box Inn which only measures 8ft by 8ft, can be found in Cleethorpes. This tiny little pub can only fit six people, two of which would have to be the bar staff. It resides in a former train station Signal Box which was moved from Scunthorpe Steelworks, to the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway in 1995. It then became a pub in 2006. This little spot also has another claim to fame — it is the only pub in Grimsby and Cleethorpes which serves Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone Lager on tap.

The Little Prince

Actually found within Old Kent Market, The Little Prince is an absolute find. The small unit measures 11ft by 6’6ft within the Old Kent Market, an indoor market which used to be the Matchroom sports bar and at one time a cinema. The pub has space for only six people inside.

The Circus Tavern

As one of Manchester’s oldest pubs, The Circus Tavern has been a favourite of residents and visitors for decades.

The building is believed to date back to 1790, before being transformed into a pub in 1840. It was named The Circus Tavern as so many performers from the city’s permanent circus used to frequent there. The pub is only a few feet long and the bar itself is nestled in the corner of the hallway, near the entrance. The pub serves lager, cider and John Smiths Smooth. There is also one handpump serving Tetley’s Cask.

Platform 3

This former coal ordering office is now home to Platform 3. Nestled in Claygate, the pub only has room for one or two customers ordering inside. The site is ran by Brightwater Brewery, and even sells its own Platform 3 mechanise, such as tote bags. Due to licensing restriction, the pub can only serve beverages in plastic cups.

The Wee Pub

In the Scottish capital is The Wee Pub that can sit up to 20 people. Owned by the pub next door, Biddy’s, The Wee Pub is the smallest pub in Scotland. This snug and cost setting is the ideal place to visit when sightseeing in Edinburgh. It can even be hired out. Inside you will find an eclectic décor, featuring a few tables.
