As the festive season approaches, many people will be thinking about taking a trip to visit the man himself in Lapland

If you’re feeling the festive spirit and fancy a last-minute getaway, why not consider a trip to one of the happiest countries in the world, Finland? Alongside being one of the most cheerful places on the planet, it’s also home to Santa Claus himself.

Nestled in the northernmost region is Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland and just a stone’s throw from the Arctic Circle. Here, you’ll find Santa Claus Village, where you can explore the enchanting tales of Santa’s birthplace, watch his elves at work, and even meet the jolly man himself.

The elves at Santa’s Post Office will assist you in sending your Christmas wish list, regardless of the season. To ensure your letter reaches Santa in time for Christmas, remember to post it in the red post box.

You can also get up close and personal with Santa’s reindeer at his farm, where sleigh rides around the Arctic Circle are on offer. For those keen on spotting the Northern Lights, a night-time reindeer safari into the snowy wilderness is a must.

In Finnish Lapland, you could witness up to 200 auroral sightings a year, compared to fewer than 20 in the south, reports MyLondon.

Rovaniemi is home to the must-visit Arktikum Science Museum, where you can immerse yourself in Lapland’s nature, culture and history. The museum also hosts the University of Lapland’s Arctic Centre and the Regional Museum of Lapland. Here, you can learn about the Lapland War of 1944-1945, the region’s reindeer herding, and the Sami people.

SantaPark, a magical underground cavern, offers a ride on the Magic Train through enchanting worlds. You can earn a diploma from the Elf School, cross the Arctic Circle underground, and enjoy freshly baked cookies in Mrs Gingerbread’s kitchen.

The Ice Gallery showcases the Ice Princess’ grand ice sculptures, and you can even try a drink served in a handmade ice glass. Venture into the Secret Forest. Joulukka, to uncover the secrets and behind-the-scenes action of the elves.

For art enthusiasts, the Korundi House of Culture displays a collection of Finnish modern art. Until 2013, Rovaniemi was home to the northernmost McDonald’s in the world before the chain opened a branch in Murmansk, Russia.

So, if you’re itching to discover the domicile of one of Christmas’ cherished figures, Rovaniemi eagerly awaits your visit.
