One delighted buyer called it an ‘absolute wonder to sleep on’

The dark nights have got a lot of us spending longer in bed. Whether its snuggling down a bit earlier on an evening or struggling to wake up on a gloomy morning, winter sees a lot of us frequently tucked up in our duvets.

A lot of us long for a new mattress to make it comfier, but are put off by the huge price tag that comes with it, with many top-end models costing north of £1,000. But Dunelm shoppers have found a way to get a better night’s sleep at a much cheaper price and without the inconvenience of replacing their mattress.

At £72 (or up to £120 for the largest size) Dunelm’s Memory Foam Mattress Topper is much cheaper than a new mattress, but has left many buyers delighted with how much it’s improved their sleep. The mattress features a soft, long-lasting polycotton cover, a memory foam filling, and has a durable, machine washable cover to keep it nice and fresh.

One said: “Absolutely wonderful to sleep on, cant wait to get into bed at night also bought one for my son.”

Another continued: “Great topper, we use it in our motorhome . The mattress in there was so uncomfortable but this topper changed it, so we had a good nights sleep. Worth the money and much cheaper than buying a new mattress.”

A third was also delighted: “Exactly as I expected. Love getting into bed. Would recommend this topper.” While a fourth said they’ve bought several: “This is the third one of these I have purchased! They are expensive but worth every penny! Luxury!”

Despite the wave of positive reviews, it’s worth pointing out that not everyone was thrilled: “Fit comes up tight. Slept on it now for 2 weeks. Not as soft and comfortable. Would not recommend this and paid extra for express postage and delivery to be delivery next day and arrived a day later. Very disappointed.”

Another said they found it had a “chemical smell”. Dunelm does explain that “a slight odour can be expected”, adding that it “will disperse in use”.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more then Emma makes a Premium Topper that it claims “makes falling asleep feel like a breeze”. Its Premium ThermoSync technology helps to achieve the optimal sleeping temperature every night, while it is also washable and can be flipped.

However, it’s quite a bit pricier, starting at £197.40 for a single and going up to £347.40 for the super king size. Debenhams is another retailer worth taking a look at, with a selection of more affordable options, including the Ezysleep 4 Inch Thick Super Soft Mattress Topper that’s currently on sale, taking the price down to £37.95 rather than £44.99.
