Vet Amir Anwary has revealed the five dog breeds he would avoid as pets. He explained that some of the dogs can become “really obese” and “destructive”

A vet has warned people to think twice before they look at these five dog breeds as potential choices as pets.

Amir Anwary has revealed the surprising breeds which could seem ideal, but cause financial stress and sleepless nights. He explained some of the dogs are “lovely” and “amazing” but come with a string of problems. Taking his controversial list to TikTok, Amir named the five dog breeds he would “never own” as a vet. Some of his options such as Labradors left his 730.1k followers completely stunned.

The animal expert explained that if people are really set on getting these animals, then they need to make sure they have the right personality to match. He added that some breeds like the Belgian Malinois can be “destructive”, so need someone who enjoys being outdoors. He also revealed why certain breeds such as Dachshunds need a more attentive owner, and explained the severe effects of dogs suffering from “bad separation anxiety”.

Five dog breeds to avoid, according to the vet

Dachshund

“Now I know a lot of you guys are gonna fight me on this and let me say they can be a lovely breed, but they can be very stubborn,” he said. “They can bark the whole night if they want to, and they can have some really bad separation anxiety. And they’re also prone to a condition called intervertebral disc disease, which is basically back problems. And they can also become really obese, which makes the back problems that much worse.”

French bulldog

The expert, who is also known as Amirthevet on TikTok, said: “This cute, adorable little abomination. If it is not breathing issues, it is skin problems. If it is not skin problems, it’s back problems. And they are so expensive to get in the first place. As a vet, I see these dogs coming in all the time for so many different medical issues. I would not own a French bulldog ever, but they are adorable.”

Belgian Malinois

“This is not a dog. This is a machine. It requires constant physical and mental stimulation,” said Amir. “I work a full time job. There’s no way I can give this kind of dog the attention it deserves to thrive. And if it doesn’t thrive, it becomes destructive.”

Border Collie

“Lovely, lovely dog, but it Is in fact a working dog and they all basically have ADHD,” he explained. “They’re always on, they always need physical and mental stimulation and I could not possibly provide a Border Collie with the amount of stimulation that it needs to stay happy. If it doesn’t stay happy, it becomes destructive.”

Labrador

Amir explained why he could “never” own this popular breed. He said: “Labradors are amazing and yes they are. But Labradors are a dog breed that are very prone to becoming overweight and they are also a dog breed that love to eat absolutely everything. So they are very food driven. So what do you get when you cross a dog that loves to eat absolutely everything with a dog that gets fat when it eats anything? You get a dog that is perpetually overweight. I love giving my dog treats. My Labrador would be rolling all over the place. That is why I could never own a Labrador.”

Animal lovers flooded the comment section to share their thoughts. Some people agreed with the analysis and joked about their experiences with certain breeds. The pet owners shared that they were unaware of the common traits and said they made “terrible” mistakes when picking their first dog. One person said: “You don’t own a Dachshund, they own you.”

Another wrote: “As a border collie owner I can honestly say I love border collies but do NOT get them if you can’t provide lots of exercise daily.” A third user commented: “I understand the dachshund thing. We have three and wow they are stubborn. I’d like to add Jack Russells to this list. They need so much exercise and attention.” However, one user disputed the named breeds and said: “Owner of two Labs. Best dogs ever and not even a close second.” Another added: “My Border Collie is so laid back. I’m now afraid she’s not normal.”
