Returning to the garden after a bleak winter can feel daunting, with overgrown hedges and murky ponds to contend with.

As brighter days begin, and longer daylight hours, it’s time to think about cleaning your garden pond for the sake of the fish – and the wildlife who may rely on it this summer. There is, however, one easy tip to help restore its clarity quickly. According to Gardeners World, adding barley straw is a natural and effective method for controlling algae growth in ponds, which typically causes dark and murky water.

Barley straw works by releasing compounds like humic acid that prohibit algae growth. It is a non-toxic alternative to harsh chemicals for eliminating unsightly algae, making it safe for fish, wildlife, and plants. It not only aids in preventing algae blooms but also serves as an effective preventative measure, especially in well-oxygenated, algae-free ponds.

For optimal use of barley straw, add bales or loose straw to the pond in spring, ideally before algae blooms occur. But you must remember to replace the straw once it turns black to ensure ongoing protection against algae. Gardeners, however, are advised that overusing barley straw in the ponds can kill fish. The straw can deplete oxygen in the water as it breaks down, and this issue worsens if too much straw is added during a long warm period. Additionally, barley straw is only effective for controlling algae; it does not work against higher or vascular plants like duckweed, watermilfoil, or pondweed.

Algae blooms in household ponds are incredibly problematic because they can deplete the oxygen levels in the water, block sunlight, and release toxins, which can ultimately harm aquatic life and potentially pose a risk to humans and other animals. Algae blooms typically happen in the summer or early fall when water temperatures rise and sunlight increases.

By taking proactive steps now in the spring, such as adding barley straw to your pond, you can create a healthy pond ecosystem by summer, ensuring a safe environment for your family and local wildlife in your garden. Another method to refresh your garden before summer is to eliminate unwanted weeds . Weeds can be quite troublesome and can give your garden a neglected look if not properly managed.

Fortunately, there’s a simple solution that requires little time or money and will help your garden thrive as we enter the warmer months. You can kill off weeds by directly pouring boiled water from your kettle over them. It’s important to wear closed-toe shoes to avoid splashing your feet. Conveniently, the hot water will shock the weeds, ultimately killing the plant within a matter of days. It’s important to note that this method works best with patio weeds, as the hot water will then be less likely to land on any surrounding plants.
