The red plate has left some Wetherspoons customers perplexed – so much so that they’ve taken to social media to discuss it. But the mystery has finally been solved

Wetherspoons customers are usually clued up on what to expect when they walk into their local.

The budget-friendly pub chain, famed for its curry nights and wallet-friendly pints, is a staple of British high streets. Yet, every now and then, patrons get thrown for a loop by something quite unexpected the appearance of a red plate.

This unusual sight has sparked such curiosity that it’s become a hot topic on social media platforms like Reddit. Regulars, who are more familiar with the classic blue plates, have been left scratching their heads over the significance of the red dish.

One baffled customer shared a snap in the mildlyinteresting subreddit with the caption: “My BF got a red plate in Wetherspoons.”, reports the Daily Star.

Speculation was rife among commenters. One user suggested, “If you get the red plate in Spoons, take it to the bar and you get a free drink,”.

Another chimed in with alarm emojis, exclaiming, “YOU GOT THE RED PLATE.” And someone else confessed, “Never seen a red one before.”

The enigma of the red plate has been a recurring theme in various posts over the years. In another discussion, a Redditor claimed, “Red plates definitely existed at one point. Uncommon but they were in some pubs.”

A different user posted their own photo of the elusive plate, asking the community: “Any of you ever seen a red spoons plate? Never saw one while I was working there.”

To which another replied, “I think you’ve accidentally wandered into an alternative dimension.” One curious patron asked: “Are you their millionth customer? “.

Another remarked: “You found a shiny,” chiming into the discussion. The mystery, however, has been solved courtesy of the Daily Star.

A spokesperson for Wetherspoons revealed: “Wetherspoon did trial a red plate in a small number of pubs for use for children’s meals, to ensure all children’s meals were served on a cold plate.”Since then, the company has progressed and just launched a melamine plate for the entire children’s menu, aligning with the children’s menu design.

“But there will still be the odd red plate floating around until they finally break. No plans to shift from the standard blue patterned plate any time soon.”
