Demi Moore, Sebastian Stan and Kieran Culkin were among the winners at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards

Some of Hollywood’s biggest names came together on Sunday (January 5) at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. The first major ceremony in the 2025 awards season calendar was held at the prestigious Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, with comedian Nikki Glaser taking on hosting duties.

Adrien Brody epic The Brutalist and Netflix musical Emilia Pérez were the big winners on the night, which also saw Demi Moore win her first Golden Globe for her role in body horror The Substance. Among the other winners were Sebastian Stan, Kieran Culkin and Colin Farrell, while hit musical Wicked earned the Box Office Achievement award.

The Golden Globes are a strong indicator of who will win at the Oscars, which are scheduled for March 2. Last year’s outstanding TV was also recognised at the Golden Globes, with samurai saga Shōgun winning four awards and Baby Reindeer winning two, while The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White was named the best actor in a musical or comedy for the third consecutive year.

Marvel actor Sebastian Stan won the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award for his role as an aspiring actor with facial disfigurement. A Real Pain

Kieran Culkin beat his Succession co-star Jeremy Strong to win the best supporting actor award for his performance in this comedy-drama. Written and directed by The Social Network star Jesse Eisenberg, A Real Pain follows two Jewish American cousins – played by Eisenberg and Culkin – as they travel to Poland to honor their late grandmother.

A Real Pain premieres in UK cinemas on January 10.

The Brutalist

This historical epic won in the Best Motion Picture – Drama category, while Adrien Brody and Brady Corbet took home best actor and best director awards. The film centres around a Hungarian Jewish architect – played by Brody – who emigrates to the post-war United States after surviving the Holocaust.

The Brutalist premieres in UK cinemas on January 24.

Challengers

The music from multi-award-winning composers from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross was crowned Best Original Score. Challengers stars Zendaya as a former tennis prodigy turned coach in the centre of a love triangle with her husband and his former best friend.

Challengers is streaming on Prime Video.

Conclave

British Peter Straughan took home the Best Screenplay award for his work on this political thriller. Boasting a stellar cast led by Ralph Fiennes, Conclave explores the clandestine process of electing a new pope following the sudden death of the incumbent.

Emilia Pérez

This Spanish-language musical earned four wins, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language. It stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón and centres around a Mexican cartel leader (Gascón) who changes gender to escape her criminal past

Emilia Pérez is streaming on Netflix.

Sky Stream lets members watch live and on-demand TV content without a satellite dish or aerial and includes hit shows like The Day of the Jackal and the upcoming second season of Squid Game.

Flow

Flow beat the likes of Inside Out 2 and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl to be crowned best animated film at the Golden Globes. It centres around a cat whose home is devastated by a great flood and must team up with various animals taking refuge on a boat in order to survive.

Flow premieres in UK cinemas on March 3.

I’m Still Here

In a category that also featured Angelina Jolie, Tilda Swinton, Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet, it was Fernanda Torres that was named this year’s best female actor for her performance in this Brazilian drama. She stars as a mother forced to reinvent herself after the disappearance of her husband during the military dictatorship in Brazil, 1971.

I’m Still Here premieres in UK cinemas on February 21.

The Substance

Demi Moore has won her first Golden Globe aged 62 for her role in Coralie Fargeat’s body horror. Moore stars as an ageing celebrity who takes a black-market drug that creates a younger, better version of herself.

The Substance is streaming on Mubi and Prime Video’s Mubi Channel.

Wicked

Based on the blockbuster Broadway musical, Wicked serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz and origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West. Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, it took more than $680 million at the global box office, which has seen it follow in Barbie’s footsteps to claim the Golden Globes’ Box Office Achievement award.
