This gift card could potentially cause a stir in your home.

If you’ve ever popped into a supermarket, you’ll have noticed the stands near the tills showcasing an array of gift cards for purchase. These cards are perfect birthday gifts when you’re unsure what the recipient might fancy, as they allow them to pick whatever they desire from the store or app you’ve chosen.

Typically, gift cards can be purchased for shops, eateries, and occasionally even experiences, like spa days or gig tickets. However, one woman was left utterly flabbergasted when she spotted a rather unusual gift card on offer at her local supermarket.

Katy Laser shared a video on TikTok displaying a variety of gift cards, featuring favourites such as Starbucks, Adidas, Disney, and Xbox. But tucked amongst these standard offerings was a card that caught her off guard – it was for the dating app Tinder.

In her clip, she queried: “In what scenario would this be an appropriate gift?”.

She further noted in the caption that she “could really stir the pot” if she decided to buy the gift card for the wrong individual, particularly if they’re already in a relationship or have been single for a considerable period.

Tinder only offers gift cards in the US, and they can be used to purchase Tinder Plus. This premium subscription enhances the dating app experience by providing unlimited likes, rewinds, and the option to change your location with a feature known as Passport.

If the gift card has enough credit, it can also be redeemed for a month of Tinder Gold, a higher subscription tier that includes additional perks over Tinder Plus. With Gold, users have the advantage of seeing who likes them and the ability to hand out five “super likes” daily.

The gift card Katy showcased featured the Tinder logo on its face. However, when purchasing a gift card online, there’s an option to select a message tailored to the occasion. Birthday greetings such as “Welcome to adulthood” are available, along with other cheeky messages like “Your dry spell ends here” and “Have yourself a hot girl summer”.

Priced at $39.99 online, these gift cards roughly equate to one month of Tinder Gold, which astonishingly costs $18.99 per week. In comparison, Tinder Plus is more affordable at $9.99 per month.

In the UK, Tinder Plus costs £8.33 per month for 12 months, while Tinder Gold costs £13.33 per month on a 12-month contract. There is also an ever higher tier, Tinder Platinum, which allows you to message people before matching with them and shows you a history of the people you’ve liked over the last seven days. This tier costs £16.67 per month for 12 months in the UK, and is $39.99 per month in the US.

Katy’s video unveiling the Tinder gift cards sparked surprise and intrigue among viewers, many of whom also pointed out the steep pricing. Another viewer chimed in with an anecdote about the perfect scenario for gifting such a card.

One individual spilled the beans, saying: “I can answer this! A friend of mine found out her fiancé was on Tinder in early February. She gave him a card with that inside of it for Valentine’s Day and dumped him.”

Even Tinder chimed in with their two cents, posting: “To your single best friend on her birthday, duh!”.
