One woman was over the moon to discover why her clothes kept smelling musty despite repeated washes – and it turned out the culprit was the washing machine itself.

We often take our washing machines for granted. They’re a staple in homes, tirelessly working to keep our wardrobes fresh.

However, many don’t realise that while the washing machine takes care of our laundry with ease, we need to reciprocate by keeping the machine clean to ensure it operates effectively. Highlighting this, a woman shared a video on Beldray’s TikTok account showing her cleaning the inside of her washing machine – focusing on the seal and filter.

The clip came with an enlightening text overlay: “She doesn’t know it yet, but the reason her clothes have been smelling musty is the hidden grime inside her washing machine.”

Accompanying the video was a caption explaining: “Here’s why your clothes may be smelling damp. Hidden grime in your washing machine’s seal and filter can make your clothes smell musty. Over time, this build-up creates the perfect environment for mould to grow inside the machine.”

How to clean washing machine seal

In terms of tackling the washing machine seal, Beldray posted another video detailing the process. They suggest using a brush to delve into the nooks of the washing machine seal, which helps to remove “hidden mould and dirt efficiently”.

Next, spray the seal. They advised: “Spray a mix of water and white vinegar or your favourite antibacterial cleaner into the washing machine to loosen dirt, grime and hidden mould’. Then “scrub thoroughly”. Finally, “wipe it down” for a “spotless and fresh finish.

Beldray suggests doing this routine regularly to “ensure your washing machine is running smoothly and smelling fresh”.

How to clean washing machine filter

Many people are unaware that their washing machine has a filter that needs cleaning, as it’s usually tucked away in a separate compartment.

A property expert from Select London recently took to TikTok to educate users on how to clean their washers. The expert starts by placing a towel under the machine and then opens a small hatch at the bottom front.

Inside is the filter compartment, which needs to be opened and cleared out. “As soon as I open this you’re going to see the water gushing out. […] Please be warned, it will stink because you’ve got all the dirt that’s been collecting underneath and as you can see right now, as my example, we’ve got hair bands, all kinds of other stuff that you’ll find in there.”

Firstly, she sanitises the drainage area with antibacterial wipes. Next, she moves the filter to the sink and meticulously cleans it using washing up liquid, followed by a thorough rinse before refitting it back into place.
