A woman has shared that she is being ‘driven insane’ by the build-up of condensation in her home, and is looking for advice on how to prevent it – and luckily, there’s a budget-friendly way

As the mercury drops, many of us are noticing the unwelcome return of condensation on our windows, leading to a potential breeding ground for unsightly black mould.

One frustrated homeowner vented her exasperation over the relentless condensation in her house, seeking tips to combat the issue. While opening windows might seem like an obvious solution to improve airflow, it’s not exactly wallet-friendly during these times of soaring energy costs.

Fortunately, followers of Instagram cleaning guru Mrs Hinch, who boasts 4.7 million fans, have come to the rescue with their thrifty suggestions. On the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group, the beleaguered woman posted: “Condensation hacks please, I’m being driven insane!”

The overwhelming consensus among the flood of replies was clear: get a dehumidifier. One helpful commenter advised: “We use a dehumidifier in the winter which helps. But other than that it’s heat and ventilation plus make sure your loft has adequate insulation and it’s been installed properly. There should be a gap around the edge where your roof tiles meet the walls I believe.”

People are joining the conversation, with one person suggesting: “As above. If you do get a dehumidifier make sure it is a low-energy one. Ours costs only a few pence per hour,” while another simply endorses: “Dehumidifier. They are amazing.”

Reinforcing the idea, another chimed in: “A good dehumidifier cured my condensation and mould problem. Worth the money.” Dehumidifiers range in price, but you can get a Black+Decker one for as little as £39.99 at Currys, although at the time of writing it is out of stock. Instead, you could snap one up today for £54.99 by Russell Hobbs on the same website.

Most dehumidifiers work by drawing excess moisture from the air in the room, which can help combat condensation and mould growth. According to Which?, the best dehumidifiers don’t cost much to run, and can be a great investment.
