A woman has shared a video of herself cleaning her bathroom mirrors using a potato – and it’s safe to say people were a little confused by the method but others loved it

It’s easy to overlook the smudges on your mirror, even though it’s something you gaze into every day.

But when it comes to making them sparkle without any streaks, it can be quite the challenge. Luckily, a cleaning expert has let us in on a brilliant tip for keeping mirrors spotless and free from pesky marks using an item from your pantry – and it won’t even set you back 20p.

Instagram sensations Jimmy and Laura Astuces, who go by @jimmy_decom, revealed their nifty trick to their fans, showing Laura working her magic with a potato. In their viral clip, Laura is seen slicing off the end of a spud before heading to the bathroom where the mirror is speckled with water spots.

She then proceeds to smear the potato across the mirror’s surface, causing the water to spread evenly over the glass. After wiping away the moisture with a cloth, not only does the mirror look immaculate and streak-free, but it also seems to repel water when she splashes it on, almost as if the potato has rendered the mirror ‘waterproof’.

The reaction online was mixed – some applauded the ingenious hack, while others bemoaned the cost of food being too high to justify such use. One person commented: “Not with these inflated food prices.” Another curiously inquired: “But how does one discover this in the first place?” A different user offered an alternative, posting: “The soap also works well and against fogging!”

Several people questioned if the method also worked on car windows, as it could save drivers time. One user quipped: “Food waste”, followed by an unimpressed emoji, adding: “It’s better to do it with the skin of the potato, right?” “First off I am not wasting a good potato”, another jested.
