Cleaning the shower head isn’t a task we all do often but if you’re looking for a way to tackle the build up of limescale and other dirt, one woman’s cleaning hack could help

Cleaning the bathroom can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to making your shower sparkle.

From washing glass shower doors without leaving streaks to scrubbing taps until they shine, it’s a chore that requires some elbow grease. The shower head itself can be particularly tricky, as limescale build-up can affect water flow.

If you’ve noticed weaker water pressure or random spray directions, it might be time to clean your shower head. One woman has shared a unique hack for removing limescale and other dirt from the appliance, with ‘gross’ but satisfying results.

A TikTok user named Kirsten (@creepykiki) revealed her method, which involves a plastic bag and white vinegar. She was inspired by another video showing the same trick.

In her experiment, she filled a sandwich bag with white vinegar and attached it to the shower faucet. The original video showed tiny particles of dirt and limescale floating in the bag, demonstrating the extent of hard water build-up on the shower head.

Hoping for a squeaky clean shower, Kirsten took to filming herself as she tied a bag filled with vinegar onto her shower head, using what seemed to be a bandana to hold it in place, ready to tackle the pesky limescale build-up. She left the concoction to work its magic overnight and was keen to show off the outcome the next morning.

Eager TikTokers watched as she released a follow-up video the next day, having kept the bag on for ‘about 12 hours’, eagerly rattling it to show off the particles that had gathered inside, expressing her disgust with an audible ‘eww!’ at the sight of the grime. “Oh my god, what is that? ” she exclaimed, following up with “this is so freaking gross”.

Luckily for Kirsten, her water appeared clearer than the original poster’s, who had heavy lumps of muck swirling in their bag. She expressed her relief in her second post caption: “thank goodness it wasn’t that gross! Idk if I could shower again if it were”.

This cleaning trick won’t clean out your wallet either, as you can snag a pack of 20 sandwich bags for £1.65 from Tesco and a 568ml bottle of white vinegar costs just 38p. Considering you’d use about half a bottle for each bag and one bag per attempt, the total cost is roughly 17p.

The original clip went viral, racking up over 6 million views, with masses flocking to the comments. One viewer quizzed, “Do you people not clean your stuff on a regular basis? “.

Another user shared their success with the hack, stating: “I did this a while ago , I was planning on replacing it, thought I have nothing to lose. Worked amazingly, never replaced it”. However, some users pointed out a potential downside to the cleaning tip, as one TikTok user noted: “Vinegar will also strip the chrome from the metal”.
