The world’s most walkable destination has been named.
If you love to wander on foot while you’re on holiday, taking in the sights and sounds slowly, then this Italian city should be next on your list for an autumnal getaway.
Florence, the capital of Tuscany in Italy, has recently been named the most walkable city in the world, according to research from investing website insidermonkey.
To discover which city would win first place, analysts used websites like Tourlane and WalkScore then mapped the distances between top tourist attractions. From there, they analysed the air quality in each city to make sure that you’ll be breathing in fresh air while you wander through the city.
In Florence, all major attractions are within a half mile radius of each other and the central city is walkable within two hours.
“Florence’s walkability seeps through in its historic centre, where narrow lanes lead to landmarks like the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio,” the report reads.
The entire historic centre of the city is a designated UNESCO site, housing fascinating attractions; the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, Piazza del Duomo, and Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. This makes for a very full day of history, with all attractions easily accessible by foot.
Tripadvisor has plenty of walking tours for this incredibly historic city. One of these which was commended by the site was Florence Sunset Food & Wine Tour with Eating Europe
The tour has a five star rating with almost 2000 reviews, and takes tourists through the city of Florence while showing them how to make negronis (Florence’s signature cocktail) and sampling different Florentine delicacies. The tour takes three and a half hours.
One person described it as a “must try”.
