Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim saw his side come out on top in Sunday’s dramatic Manchester derby at the Etihad courtesy of some late, late heroics from Amad

Manchester United matchwinner Amad says he is embracing the team’s new identity under Ruben Amorim after downing Manchester City in the derby.

The Red Devils trailed for the majority of the match courtesy of a Josko Gvardiol header but Bruno Fernandes restored parity from the penalty spot in the 88th minute. And that set the stage for Amad to plunder a late winner just 90 seconds later.

Amad, 22, has been one of United’s brightest players since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag at the helm last month.

The winger was used sparingly by Amorim’s predecessor but is enjoying his football under United’s new boss – and Sunday’s winner against City was the icing on the cake.

“I have been waiting for a long time to have this moment,” Amad told MUTV post-match. “I have been working so hard every day to have this moment, to live this moment, and I am so happy the team is very happy with me because I am a chilled guy.

“Every time we are training, I put a smile on everyone’s face, but in the game you have to be focused and give your best. We knew today was not going to be easy because they are in the front teams.

“But this is a derby and you have to be more angry than them and we showed we’re hungry.”

Amad has shone both as a right wing-back and in United’s front three under Amorim, who has already made a major impression since arriving at Old Trafford.

The Ivorian added: “I am following the manager’s system; he demands a lot of pressing. When I have to press, I go with 100 per cent and I do not care who is there or who is not there, I go 100 per cent.

“I was happy to win the penalty. I tried to shoot but I was maybe a little bit smart and saw the defender coming and he touched my legs. For the second one, we know Licha is a good player to give you this ball. At the beginning, I did not believe in the ball because it was going too quick, but I touched the ball and I scored.

“I was so, so happy to score against City and so happy to win this game. I want to enjoy this moment and focus on the next game.”
