As the weather warms up, millions of Brits will be hanging their laundry out to dry in the garden

Warmer temperatures might tempt you to turn off the tumble dryers as spring approaches and start hanging your washing out. But if sneezing and itchy eyes have started plaguing you, it could be down to your freshly-laundered sheets.

Hay fever sufferers may find their allergies flaring up soon. About 30 different pollens can bring on hay fever symptoms, and with tree pollen prevalent in March, an allergy to which is said to affect 25% of Brits, doing laundry outdoors can make allergies flare up.

Molly Freshwater, founder of Secret Linen Store, has warned that hay fever can seriously affect your sleep, and advised against airing your bedding outside even on those perfectly sunny, breezy days.

Molly said: “Warm, dry days often see higher levels of airborne pollen, making them ideal for drying laundry outdoors but less than ideal for allergy sufferers.”

Highlighting a common mistake, she added: “Unfortunately, while fresh air and sunshine can leave your bedding feeling crisp and refreshed, they also provide the perfect opportunity for pollen to cling to fabrics. It is easy for pollen to stick to your bedding which can lead to an increase in hay fever symptoms and cause sleepless nights.”

To combat this, Molly said hay fever sufferers should keep windows shut during pollen season, despite the temptation to let the spring breeze in.

She also suggested taking a shower after being outdoors, particularly before heading to bed. You could also give your furry friends a good brush down when they come inside.

Molly’s last piece of advice is all about preventing allergens getting onto your bedding. She explains: “By placing a spare sheet over your duvet during the day, you create a protective barrier that helps prevent pollen from settling onto your bedding.

“By covering your duvet, you can significantly reduce the amount of pollen that comes into contact with your sleeping area.”

Then, just whisk away the spare sheet as you get ready for bed.
