Rosenborg’s 18-year-old midfield star Sverre Nypan is being chased by Arsenal, who believe they could be at the front of the queue, ahead of several European giants

Arsenal are close to discovering whether they have won the race for Norwegian wonderkid Sverre Nypan.

The 18-year-old Rosenberg midfielder, who is represented by super agent Rafaela Pimenta, has been carefully considering his next move amid secret discussions with a series of elite European clubs.

A final decision from the player and his entourage is now set to be communicated to relevant parties within the next few weeks. Arsenal are understood to be among the top contenders for his signature, although there is also strong interest from abroad.

Additionally, Manchester United are among Nypan’s long list of admirers, but Norwegian sources have indicated an Old Trafford switch is currently looking unlikely. The Rosenberg starlet is expected to cost upwards of £10million, though the Scandinavian outfit are yet to receive any official bids.

The feeling in Norway is that interested clubs will first wait to receive clarity on the player’s decision before opening formal talks with Rosenberg. Arsenal feel his capture would be quite the coup, given his potential and the other clubs that are interested.

The presence of Norway captain Martin Odegaard as Arsenal’s skipper could give Mikel Arteta the edge over their competitors. The Gunners are working hard to improve their options ahead of what will be a transitional summer, no matter what happens in the remainder of 2024/25.

Arsenal have moved to the front of the queue for Martin Zubimendi and are ready to pay his full £51million release clause. The Spain star rejected a move to Liverpool for the same fee before the start of the season, but he could line up alongside his former team-mate Mikel Merino next season.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match against Aston Villa, Arteta addressed his club’s needs in the transfer market. “We have certain situations with contracts expiring,” said Arteta, referring to Thomas Partey and Jorginho, whose current deals expire on June 30.

“We can renew those contracts like we have done in the past. We are always actively evolving the squad and understanding what the players want to do when they finish our contract together, and we have to be prepared.”

Asked about additions, he added: “At the moment we don’t have them, we are actively trying to find the best possible solution but we will have to wait and see what we can do. Obviously we have lost two massive players for us in the frontline and we need some support there.”

As well as in midfield, Arsenal are hoping to bolster their forward line this month after losing Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus to serious injuries. Saka tore his hamstring, while Jesus has suffered a significant knee injury, adding to their struggles in front of goal.
