Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft has been making strange noises in recent days, with the on-board crew reporting a “sonar ping” that has left astronauts concerned

Astronaut Chris Hadfield seems to be concerned by the unsettling sounds coming from the Boeing Starliner spacecraft.

The esteemed International Space Station veteran aired his concerns on Twitter/X, highlighting the “strange noises” that have since become a viral sensation after the crew’s initial reports. Commander Hadfield, reacting to the spooky audio, tweeted: “There are several noises I’d prefer not to hear inside my spaceship, including this one that Boeing Starliner is now making.”

The public shared their unease, with some comparing the sounds to a “horrorshow”. Given Hadfield’s spacefaring credentials, his comments have been taken very seriously on X.

Social media users weighed in, with one remarking: “You saying this hits a lot differently than nearly anyone else saying this.” Another expressed fear, commenting: “That is some Stanley Kubrick level horrorshow right there…” References to the Alien film franchise surfaced, with quips about extraterrestrial stowaways.

One user humorously suggested: “Everything is fine. It’s just the heartbeat of the thing clinging to the outside making noise…,” while another invoked the chilling tagline from Ridley Scott’s iconic movie, saying: “In space, no one can hear you scream.”

Worried members of the public made references to popular space-based horror films. One penned: “Nope. I’ve seen Event Horizon. Get rid of it.” And another jokingly added: “Have they tried turning it off and on again?”.

Astronaut Butch Wilmore confirmed the eerie noise and had radioed Mission Control at Johnson Space Center from the International Space Station to enquire about the mysterious sound.

An audio recording of the report has since surfaced and Mission Control can be heard confirming the noises Butch was referencing. They said: “It was kind of like a pulsating noise, almost like a sonar ping.”

The noise is believed to be emanating from a speaker inside the spacecraft, with initial reports of the strange noise made yesterday. Astronauts and officials are yet to confirm what the noise is.
