Aubrey Plaza’s husband and director Jeff Baena has died aged 47. The filmmaker was best known for Life After Beth and The Little Hours

Aubrey Plaza’s husband Jeff Baena was reportedly found dead at his Los Angeles home aged 47.

Los Angeles police and fire department received a phone call from his assistant on Friday at around 10.30am. The filmmaker was confirmed dead as cops arrived at the LA area home, law enforcement sources told TMZ. The cause of the director’s death is still being investigated by authorities.

The family have told Deadline that they are devastated by the heartbreaking news and are asking for privacy at this difficult time. The filmmaker is best known for his films Life After Beth and The Little Hours. Baena was also known for Joshy (2016), Horse Girl (2020), Spin Me Round (2022) and more.

He was born and raised in Miami before he moved to New York to attend film school. He then began his career as a filmmaker in Los Angeles. His directorial debut was with Life After Beth, which he worked on with his wife.

When asked about writing and directing the movie, Baena said to Seensome in 2014: “It’s all I ever want to do; it felt really comfortable and fun. I’ve been a writer for twelve years now and it was always a means to an end, I never wanted to be a writer, I wanted to be a director so this was always my intention and it felt right.”

Plaza, known for her role in Parks and Recreation and The White Lotus, married the director in 2021 after being together for a decade. In May of that year, Plaza casually dropped the news of their marriage in an Instagram post shared with followers.

“So proud of my darling husband @jeffbaena for dreaming up another film that takes us to italia to cause some more trouble [devil emoji],” she wrote as the caption as announced they were working on a movie called Spin Me Round.

Although the couple kept their relationship away from the spotlight, Plaza – who most recently appeared in Agatha All Along, previously praised her husband. She told People: “I think that when you’re with someone that is in your field, they understand what you’re dealing with on a deeper level. So obviously you are able to support each other and really understand kind of the journey that we’re both on.”

Baena is survived by wife and actress Aubrey, mum Barbara Stern, stepfather Roger Stern, father Scott Baena and stepmother Michele Baena, brother Brad Baena as well as stepsister and stepbrother Bianca Gabay and Jed Fluxman.
