A banana enthusiast shared a clever hack that will keep your bananas fresh for up to 15 days – and it’s even better than the cling film trick that’s gone viral on TikTok

Banana lovers, listen up!

A fruit fan has ditched the old cling film trick for banana stems and revealed a “more effective” method to keep your bananas fresh – just dunk the stalks in water. They spilled the beans: “A simple and cheaper way of making bananas last longer is to immerse the stalk end in water. Ours keep for 10 to 14 days when stored like that. Rather than the three or four days in a fruit bowl on their own or on a banana hook.”

Curious to see if this tip really works, social media guru @that40yearguy took to his platform to conduct his own test. He told his followers: “I’ve never done a week-long test, we’re going to try this banana hack to see if they stay fresh for longer.”

In front of his audience, he showcased six bananas and began his experiment: “I’m going to put three bananas in the water [stalk down] and I’m going to leave the other three sitting there.” His fans eagerly anticipated the outcome, reports the Express.

Staying true to his promise, @that40yearguy came back to the experiment after a good bit of time, announcing: “Let’s see what these bananas look like, they’ve been here for 12 days.” The results were nothing short of remarkable. The trio of bananas that had taken a dip looked almost as good as new, with just a few spots here and there, but still firm to the touch.

On the flip side, the neglected bunch had succumbed to the elements, with stems so fragile they broke at the slightest pressure, revealing an overripe interior beneath their darkened peels. Fancy extending the shelf life of your bananas? Start with buying them green and give a water bath a shot. This magical trick can help them last for a whopping 15 days.

Does cling film fail to hold up when it comes to your bananas? Worry not. You could just adopt a famous hack that’s been taking TikTok by storm. TikTok lifehack expert, Armen Adamjan of Creative Explained, said: “You ever buy bananas and they just ripen up way too fast before you get to eat them? Well, this is what you do.”

His tip involves wrapping a certain part of each banana in cling film to prolong its freshness. Adding more depth, he explains: “Separate all the bananas and then wrap each banana stem with plastic wrap. Doing this slows down the ethylene production and keeps your bananas fresh for seven days.”

But if you’re all about the environment and avoiding plastics, consider replacing the cling film with foil or even better – beeswax wrap. It’s a handy little swap that’s reusable and aces at slowing down the ripening process of your bananas.
