Strictly Come Dancing star Russell Grant, who appeared on the BBC show in 2011, admitted he was struggling after seeing ‘strange cottony things floating’ in his left eye
A Strictly Come Dancing star was rushed to hospital after suffering a worrying issue with his eyes.
Russell Grant, astrologer and a 2011 contestant on the BBC show, has revealed he woke up earlier this week with “strange cottony things floating” in his left eye. He explained how he has was rushed to hospital to see the eye clinic, before he was told there was a bleed behind his eye – but was warned by doctors that he would have to get used to the floating bits as there was no cure.
Taking to Twitter, he updated fans on what happened, sharing: “Monday: I woke with strange cottony things floating in my left eye. Headed to the opticians for tests. Next day @BlackpoolHosp called: day after into the eye clinic. Result: I had a bleed behind my eye but no retinal damage but it seems I have to befriend the floater! No cure.”
Back in March 2023, Russell revealed he had been diagnosed with a brain tumour. He regularly updates fans about his condition and last June, he revealed he might have returned to being diabetic.
At the time, he shared: “Morning. The latest news on my post pituitary brain tumour operation is the possibility I have returned to being diabetic. I was once Type 2 but controlled it by diet. However, it’s possible taking so many steroids to keep me going they’ve increased my blood sugar,” as fans rushed to wish him the best.
Back in 2021, Russell reflected on 10 years since his Strictly Come Dancing stint – where he famously was fired out of a cannon.
“The funniest thing with that is, there I was, turning things down, not thinking I could do them, but with the cannon, I couldn’t wait to do it. In fact, I demanded to rehearse it six times! I would in no way swap the memories of the Wembley Arena and 6,000 people standing and giving me an ovation – and that was before I had even come out the bloody thing!” he said.
Russell admitted he had originally said no to going on the show but his mum, who was obsessed, begged him to take part.
“In 2011, I was sat quietly at home in North Wales and the phone rang and the question came of if I would be interested in doing Strictly. And I said no, I was too old. I didn’t have the confidence and I didn’t believe in myself enough. I wanted to stay in my comfort zone, which was astrology then, forgetting that my background was not astrology,” he recalled.
“My mum was wedded to Strictly, bless her. She told me I had to go in and do it or I’d regret it for the rest of my life. We don’t want to have regrets – think of Edith Piaf, Je Ne Regrette Rien. I thank god Strictly came into my life. It taught me that if you really want to do something, just do it. I was 60 when I did it and once I’d done it, I thought why the hell couldn’t I have done it when I was 30?!”
