A star-studded line-up including Billie Eilish, Pink, Katy Perry, Nirvana and Dr Dre took to the stage at FireAid on Thursday.
The benefit concert in Los Angeles aimed to aid recovery efforts following two of the largest fires in the city’s history. Over 20 artists from a range of genres performed during the five-hour show, which was held simultaneously at two major venues in the city, with proceeds going towards wildfire relief efforts.
Actor Billy Crystal, who had a close escape from the Pacific Palisades fire earlier this month, welcomed the crowd at the Kia forum, donning the same clothes he wore during his evacuation. “You’ll be hearing from a number of people who were tragically affected by these fires, and I was one of them,” Crystal shared as he kicked off the show.
Having resided in the area for 46 years, he spoke movingly about the loss of his home. He said: “These were the clothes I wore when I fled my house with my wife Janice like so many of us did on January 7. It was all I had, wore it for a week along with a N-95 mask. I look like an evacuee or someone who just robbed a 7-11. But everybody has been so supportive. This young girl, she must have been 20, came up to me and said she understood my pain because she had lost TikTok for a day.”
Shortly after the commencement of the show at the Kia Forum, a second concert also began at the Intuit Dome. The online stream alternated between the two venues, featuring many artists who hail from or are based in Los Angeles. California-born Katy Perry proudly waved the state’s flag as she belted out hits like California Gurls. Other performers included Orange County’s No Doubt and Dr Dre, who delivered his anthem California Love.
“This is a magical moment for me. I’ve got so much love, you guys… I appreciate all the first responders and all the firemen who put their lives on the line. It’s all about love for me today,” the rapper expressed. Billie Eilish teamed up with rock legends Green Day for a performance, with the band’s lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong rallying the audience: “California, Los Angeles, Altadena, the Palisades – we are in this together.”
The surviving members of iconic 90s group Nirvana, Dave Grohl, Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic, came together again, joined by a host of guest female vocalists including St Vincent and Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth. The star-studded lineup for the two concerts also featured Olivia Rodrigo, Earth, Wind & Fire, Gracie Abrams, Joni Mitchell, Lady Gaga, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rod Stewart, Sting, Stevie Nicks and Tate McRae.
Among the notable attendees was former Vice President Kamala Harris, who was seen enjoying the show at the Intuit Dome. Funds raised from the concert, along with donations made during the event, will be channelled towards rebuilding efforts and fire prevention measures in the affected areas. The devastating fires that erupted in early January claimed the lives of at least 28 individuals and led to the destruction of over 16,000 homes and businesses.
