Cleansing is an essential part of many people’s daily skincare routine, with ‘double cleansing’ ramping up and becoming the norm in recent years – but you may be making a big mistake
A beauty guru has shared a common habit people are doing every day which could be causing them skin problems.
Cleansing is an essential part of many people’s daily skincare routine, with ‘double cleansing’ – using more than one product to remove your makeup each night – ramping up and becoming the norm in recent years.
For some people, they even cleanse their faces in the morning, on top of potentially double cleansing the night before. Popular content creator Bambi Does Beauty has advised against this, branding it an unnecessary step which could strip your skin of essential oils.
The content creator has garnered a devoted following of hundreds of thousands across TikTok and Instagram, with fans keen to try out her tips and advice on skincare and beauty products.
The 34-year-old is known for her honesty and commitment to finding effective solutions on the high street and beyond, and regularly offers her insight on tried and tested methods. In a recent video, she said: “Stop cleansing your skin in the morning. I spent my whole 20s cleansing my skin in the morning because I thought that’s what I should be doing.
“If this is you; stop. You’ll notice your skin feels less tight, dry, sensitive. Always double cleanse at night.” Many people simply rinse their faces with lukewarm water and pat dry, then spritz with a toning facial mist instead of doing a full cleanse.
In the comments section, people shared their thoughts. One person said: “Yes just use water and then do the rest of your morning skincare like normal”, while another said: “I recently stopped my morning face wash and just use warm water and a microfibre cloth and it’s made such a difference!”
Another said: “I stopped as well and I live in Humid Houston, TX! It has done wonders! Combination/acne prone skin.”
Lauded skincare expert Caroline Hirons disagrees though, and advises people to gently cleanse each morning. The qualified aesthetician, who has worked in skincare for more than 35 years, is famed for her recommendation of “double cleansing” each evening.
When discussing the publication of her bestselling book, Skincare, Hirons told The Standard: “Let’s be clear on something – there is no double cleansing in the mornings. Wake up, cleanse once, you’re good to go. You have no makeup or SPF to remove. Crack on.”
In a Reddit thread discussing advice learned from Caroline Hirons, some people were wary. One penned: “I used to follow and respect her. Then, I became an aesthetician and realised how much of her advice is just plain bad for certain skin types.
“Not everyone needs a harsh cleanser in the morning. Not everyone needs strong acids. I have desert-dry skin, so I certainly don’t need those, and neither do a lot of my clientele.”
But another said: “I really like her, she completely changed my relationship to skincare – and completely changed my skin, too. As far as I’m aware, she was the first one preaching double cleansing that has now become a common term, even a marketing slogan for some brands.”
