Jo from Wales was left disappointed after taking part in a challenge to eat three full English breakfasts in 20 minutes at a Benidorm bar and failing over what has been called a “mean” reason

A Benidorm bar has been blasted for refusing to give a British holidaymaker a nine euro prize for devouring three full English breakfasts over a “mean” reason.

Uncle Ron’s restaurant at the Spanish resort posted pictures of Jo from Wales after he took on their infamous 20-minute ‘belly buster’ challenge on 28 September – which has a success rate of just 3%. The 2,760-calorie breakfast challenge contains four sausages, four bacon rashers, four fried eggs, four hash browns, four pieces of toast, six tomatoes, half a large tin of baked beans, 10 mushrooms and two pieces of fried bread.

However, Jo failed to leave a clean plate after running out of time – being defeated by two pieces of toast and a slice of fried bread. The before photo shows Jo smiling confidently in front of the massive plate of food while the after picture features him looking sad and defeated with only the bread left on his plate.

Users were quick to brand the bar “mean” for failing the Welshman’s “impressive” attempt because he’d polished off everything else. One social media user on the post, which gained more than 400 responses, argued there was a “ridiculous amount of toast” that stopped Jo from winning.

Since January only 45 out of 1,400 hopeful winners have successfully finished the meal, which is the equivalent of three full-English breakfasts and exceeds the recommended 2,500 daily calorie intake for adult males. Georgia Smith, the owner of Uncle Rons, said: “Rules are rules. People can leave half a slice of toast but you’ve left it. It’s not a clean plate. It’s got to be a clean plate.

“I don’t care if it’s a tiny bit of corner of a piece of toast, it’s not a win unless it’s empty. People say ‘it’s not fair because I’ve got a loaf of bread on it’. I reply ‘no you haven’t, you’ve got six slices which doesn’t equate to a loaf of bread’. It’s just on the plate itself when you halve it, it just looks like you’ve got a lot of bread.

“Jo didn’t complain. People usually just have a laugh about it. They’re all confident at first until they start eating it. You’ve got a lot of everything really. It’s not an easy challenge.” The 59-year-old admitted that the ‘fun’ holiday challenge, which costs nine euros but is free for winners, attracts trolls on social media who take the challenge too seriously’.

Georgia said: “It’s just a bit of fun for people on holiday. I think people have taken it too seriously in their own heads. If they leave a little bit they get ripped to shreds [in the comments] but for leaving a lot they still get ripped to shreds. You literally can’t win. That’s why I don’t charge a lot for it. It’s not a money-making thing. It just started off as a little bit of fun. A lot of people come just to do the Belly Buster and make it part of their holiday.”

Many users criticised the bar for failing Jo’s attempt. One user said: “Give him the prize you mean g**, he’s licked the platter clean. Bread doesn’t count.” Another user said: “It’s a winner for me…a breakfast shouldn’t include a loaf of bread.” A third user said: “Good effort but that’s a ridiculous amount of toast.”

Other users praised Jo for his attempts. One user said: “Impressive for a slim due. Well done.” Another user said: “First picture happy chap. Second picture broken man. Unlucky lad valiant effort.” A third user said: “Just goes to show some people can put it away.”
