Former PM Boris Johnson hurled insults at Keir Starmer as he made a surprise appearance at a Conservative Party election rally in London two days before polling day

Boris Johnson has made a surprise appearance at a Tory election rally in London as the party turns to the disgraced ex-PM in a desperate last ditch bid to rescue its failing campaign.

The former Conservative leader told supporters: “When Rishi asked me to come and help of course I couldn’t say no… We’re all here because we love our country.”

As he arrived to speak, he was greeted by cheers, claps, whistles and chants of “Boris, Boris, Boris”. Mr Johnson made a series of insulting remarks about Keir Starmer, who he said, “sits there with his mouth open like a stunned mullet”.

In a bizarre speech, the ex-PM accused the Opposition Leader of trying to “usher in the most left-wing Labour government since the war”.

“We must not let it happen,” he added. “Don’t let the Putinistas deliver the Corbynistas. Don’t let Putin’s pet parrots give this entire country psittacosis – which is a disease you get by the way from cosying up to pet parrots.”

Rishi Sunak, who quit as Chancellor when Mr Johnson PM, attempted to paper over their difficult history. “Isn’t it great to have our Conservative family united, my friends?” he asked the crowd.

Mr Johnson stood down as an MP in disgrace last year ahead of the publication of a damning report that found he lied and lied and lied about Partygate. He quit as PM in 2022 after he was accused of not telling the truth about Tory sex pest Chris Pincher.

Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper said: “This is an insult to everyone who made heartbreaking sacrifices during the pandemic. Rishi Sunak has reached a desperate new low, turning to a man who discredited the office of Prime Minister and lied to the country time after time.”

The rally was also attended by David Cameron, the architect of austerity who Mr Sunak brought back as Foreign Secretary. The PM said Lord Cameron had “served our country with distinction”.
