Medical responders, police and firefighters were mobilised but there was nothing they could do to save the 73-year-old holidaymaker and he was pronounced dead at the scene

A British man has died during a holiday hike in northern Spain with his wife and friends.

His partner alerted the emergency services after he collapsed during the walk near the small town of Anguiano in the province of La Rioja. He was reportedly by the Valvanera Monastery guesthouse at the time.

Medical responders, police and firefighters were mobilised but there was nothing they could do to save the 73-year-old holidaymaker and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The alarm was sounded around 3pm yesterday. An autopsy is expected to take place today.

Well-placed sources said there was nothing pointing to the death being suspicious in any way. The hikers were understood to have been walking a route between the Valvanera Monastery, nestled in the Sierra de la Demanda mountains and home to a 28-room guesthouse and restaurant, and Los Pancrudos which is a succession of four mountains all above 6,500ft high. As well as a woman described as his wife the dead man is said to have been with two friends.
