Fans of the bakery who have been going there for years high became nostalgic about when a handful of sausage rolls were bought for ‘around a pound’

The price of a bakery favourite has risen sparking anger among pastry fans.

People who visit Greggs regularly claim there has been price “increases every week”. Food fans have let their feelings be known after on social media user shared an image of a pastry tagged at £1.45 for takeaway or £1.75 to eat in. The post on social media site Reddit was sarcastically captioned: “I swear it increases weekly.” The Daily Record reported how long-time fans of the high street bakery are now becoming nostalgic about when a handful of sausage rolls were bought for around a pound.

It drew parallels with cost increases of Freddos which have also seen a notable price rise. Customers reminisced about getting more for their money in the old days. And the price tag on their favourite snacks is on the ascent with consumers unhappy about the price rises. One individual remarked: “I remember when you could get four for a quid.” Another expressed bewilderment, stating: “I swear not long ago it was £1.05.”

A third chimed in: “When I started college in 2020 it was a quid. After two years it went up to £1.20. Watching it slowly increase by 5p was quite the experience.” Adding to the debate, a fourth lamented: “What’s worse is that even though it’s called a ‘sausage roll’, they now ask if you mean ‘pork sausage roll’ because vegans might be offended if they’re given the wrong one. The vegan version should just be called a vegan sausage roll.”

The chat soon shifted to how other cherished treats have similarly seen their prices soar, with customers of various brands feeling the squeeze. One user on social media remarked: “And it was 25p for a First Class Stamp, the mini cans of Coke were in the pick n mix bit of Woolworths and a 99 Flake was 99p.”

Another contributed their perspective, stating: “I grew up watching the Fudge bars go from 10p then 15p then 20p then 25p now 30p and whatever it is now.” While someone else added their memories into the mix, saying: “64p for a chicken bake in 2003. Three sausage rolls for £1.10. 74p for a steak bake. I think I will remember this information long after I’ve forgotten my own name.”

The Mirror reported earlier how we know where where to go for a pumpkin-spiced latte and still have change left in our pockets. The surprising news is that Greggs showed it can beat fancy coffee shops on price with Greggs serving up the the cheapest PSL in town. The autumn treat can be bought for just £2.20 which is 20p cheaper than it was the previous year. The baker’s pumpkin spice latte is a bargain price for those who want a seasonal steal.
